Belonging Doesn't Happen By Accident

Dear Friends of We Care Arts:

Two hundred and fifty years ago, a group of people came together to declare the kind of nation they hoped to build. Long before there was a country and picnics with fireworks, there was a shared belief that people mattered and that freedom was worth pursuing together.

Every strong community begins the same way.

Someone chooses to say, YOU MATTER. YOU BELONG HERE.

In June at our annual summer picnic, I watched that declaration come to life. I watched friends laughing together, dancing without hesitation, families sharing a meal, and conversations picking up as if they had just stepped out of a classroom. Then one of our artist-clients showed up who had been out recovering from surgery. Before anyone could say a word, smiles spread across the gathering. Hugs followed. Excited greetings. It wasn't just a welcome back. It was a reminder that he had been missed. He shared that this summer, he'll return to classes and that two of his family members will be joining him.

That moment reminded me of something we all know deep down. Every one of us wants more than a place to go. We want a place where we are known. Where people notice when we're missing. Where they celebrate when we return.

At We Care Arts, empowering healing begins with art, but it grows through community.

Whether someone is learning a new art technique, discovering creative expression for the first time, or simply sitting beside a friend while creating something beautiful, they are building confidence, relationships, and hope. The supportive behavioral health interventions that We Care Arts adult continuing education classes provide are so much more than learning a new skill. Our lesson plans encourage their artwork to be a way to regularly practice mindfulness, promote emotional regulation, stress reduction, build social connections, and healthy coping strategies among individuals living with disabilities, SUD, and mental health diagnoses. At our core, We Care Arts is about continuing to discover purpose, possibility, and connection throughout life.

As we have been celebrating our nation's 250th birthday, I've been thinking about our inalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Those words remind us that life is more than survival. Food, shelter, and safety matter deeply. They are essential.

But we also need friendship.

          Purpose.

               Creativity.

A place where we know we belong.

And THAT is exactly what your generosity makes possible.

If you've been considering becoming a monthly donor, this is a wonderful time to begin. A gift of just $21 a month adds up to $252 over the course of a year, a meaningful way to celebrate America's 250th birthday ($250 plus 2 to “grow on!) while empowering the We Care Arts’ artist-clients. Your planned monthly giving lets the artist-clients know that not only do they belong here but that we see them and value what they bring to our community as our friends, family, and neighbors each and every month.

Because belonging doesn't happen by accident. It happens because people like you make a declaration of what they value, band together with like-minded individuals, and take action to make a difference. And together we choose to build a community where everyone has a place.

Thank you for believing that empowering healing through art and community changes lives.

Grateful we're building our community together,

Katie Neubert, Executive Director

P.S. I am a monthly donor because I believe belonging doesn't happen by accident. It happens when people declare what matters and choose to build that future together. If you, like me, believe everyone deserves a place where they know they belong, where healing, friendship, and purpose make the pursuit of life, liberty, and happiness possible, I invite you to join me. Together, we'll create more moments like the one I witnessed at our summer picnic and in our classrooms throughout the year... one month at a time.
