An Eventful Month for the Outreach Department

We Care Arts’ Outreach had an exciting month in June! Starting off the month, to accommodate our ever-growing department, our new Outreach Coordinator, Paige Peterson, began working at We Care Arts.

About Paige

Paige has lived in Kettering her entire life and has long been familiar with We Care Arts, often passing by the building throughout her childhood. Growing up, she loved art and was drawn to the idea of creativity making a meaningful impact in people’s lives, even considering a future in art therapy. She graduated in May with a bachelor’s degree in social work, completing an especially demanding final semester in which she navigated three internships at once.

One of her placements, through Circles USA, involved facilitating an educational group for individuals experiencing poverty and teaching social‑emotional learning lessons to children. Another internship was with a nonprofit supporting families with children ages 0–5, including pregnant mothers. There, she helped operate a well‑stocked food pantry, assisted with an outdoor community pantry, and supported a unique store where families could earn coupons for essential items such as clothing, medicine, cribs, strollers, and bottles. She also managed the organization’s large community garden, which supplied fresh produce to the pantry and served as a resource for family cooking classes.

Her third internship was with an adult day program, where she worked as a job coach for several clients—many of whom participated in the Job Club she led. She guided lessons on interviewing skills, workplace appearance, job safety, budgeting, and money management.

Garden Makeover

The WCA Optimist Club worked together in the sensory garden, making the corner much more inviting. They pulled weeds using an identification guide and had conversations about the weeds, getting input from each other to correctly identify them. The club then worked together to paint the bricks, making it much more beautiful and welcoming to everyone. They decided on a design to do together as a whole, painting each brick one color then giving the bricks a splatter to make it all come together.

Visit from Wright State Psychiatry Residents

Later in the month, a group of Psychiatry residents from Wright State visited on a tour then completed a salt watercolor painting. Each person mentioned the fun they were having and enjoyed the experience. This will open a door for lots of potential referrals to WCA in the future.

New Partnerships

We are excited to be starting new outreach programming partnerships at the end of July. We will be working with Wright Memorial Library as well as 10 Wilmington Place. For the first class, both groups will be doing a felt collage.

We are looking forward to strengthening community partnerships and building new connections through our ever-expanding Outreach department.
