Outreach Updates: November

We started Outreach in October by returning to the Miami County YMCA, teaching a fall wreathmaking class to their senior activities group. One participant, Tom T., approached me about his desire to create a wreath for his mother’s birthday that week. He started the class feeling intimidated by the project and unsure that he could complete it. With some encouragement and teamwork, he created a wreath that he was proud of, telling me, “Thank you for all that you do. If you can teach me, you can teach anybody.” It is a privilege to bring art into the lives of people like Tom, and the best part of Outreach.

Other Outreach classes this month created a troll sculpture inspired by the works of Thomas Dambo. Participants enjoyed creating sculptures made of found objects and natural materials. In our Memory Café with the Alzheimer’s Association, participants worked with their loved ones to create a set of imprinted coasters. Functional art projects like this one help to boost confidence in artistic abilities as participants incorporate their art into their daily lives.

We Care Arts continues to serve a growing number of organizations in Montgomery County and beyond. We are currently on the lookout for new partners for 2026!
