October Updates From The Curator
Hello everyone,
I’m Lacey, the Art Curator here at We Care Arts, and I’m excited to share some wonderful updates with you this month!
Özüm B. Featured at the Dayton Library
Artist-client Özüm B. has two pieces accepted into the New Americans art exhibit at the Dayton Library. We are thrilled for more people to see Özüm’s work, and so happy that her piece “Life” was featured as the cover art for the reception invitation! The opening reception will be Thursday, November 5th, from 5 to 7 p.m., with an artist talk on Thursday, December 3rd, from 5 to 7 p.m. The artwork will be on display from November through December. Be sure to stop by the Main Dayton Library branch at 215 E. Third St. in Dayton to see Özüm’s pieces!
Collective Curation: Textures of Resilience
I’m also excited to share that we completed a Collective Curation project with the Dayton Convention Center, created by artist-clients Abbie K., Danielle H., Evelyn I., Jen S., Rachel K., Rebekah S., Ruth H., Todd S., and Tonia W.
Titled Textures of Resilience, this collaborative mixed media piece was created by the artist-clients of the We Care Arts Collective Curations program. It combines wood, marble, and stone into a single composition and reflects our mission of empowering healing through art and community.
Early meetings focused on material study, as artists examined visual samples of wood, marble, and stone and noted differences in texture. Composition decisions, including how the three textures transition across the piece, were made through group discussion and consensus. Artists tested different arrangements, laying out sections before final placement to see how wood, marble, and stone interacted in color, texture, and visual weight.
The result is two, unified artworks that reflect a full class process, shaped by shared planning, hands-on material work, technical problem-solving, and group decision-making at every stage. Beyond its physical construction, Textures of Resilience embodies the spirit of the We Care Arts community: a space where art becomes a path toward healing, confidence, and connection.
