WE CARE ARTS 25TH ANNIVERSARY GALA!

WCA Executive
Director Terry Schalnat and Board President Andrew Coleman
We Care Arts celebrated its 25th year anniversary
on Friday, March 28, 2008 at the Dayton Marriott. Attendees of
the Anniversary Gala, titled “A Sterling Celebration” began the
evening with a walk through 7 foot tall statues created by art
teacher Sharen Eninger with many of our artists. The statues
depicted the various states of disabilities, the joy to be found
in creating art, and the wonderful feeling of art helping people
discover their own possibilities.
The evening progressed with bidding on the Silent
Auction, and shopping in our Gala Gift Shop, followed by a
wonderful dinner.
The Program part of the evening began with a
special Thank You to our Corporate Sponsors. Our Gold Sponsors
were The Cole Foundation, Dayton Marriott and James Free
Jewelers and our Silver Sponsor was Thrivent Financial for
Lutherans. The Bronze Sponsors were FirstDay Financial, Gresham,
Smith & Partners, Premier Health Partners, Sinclair Community
College, and Vectren. Without this important support, we would
be unable to hold these crucial fundraising events.
We also thanked all our committees for their hard
work on this event and the help of our Board, Staff and Clients
in making this year’s celebration a great success. Also special
thanks to Carole Ohl and Cathy Helmers for their production of
the 25th Anniversary book.
Our Board President, Andrew Coleman, then
introduced the celebrities in attendance: Brewster Rhoads, the
State of Ohio Regional Director for Southwestern Ohio, Dayton
Mayor Rhine McLin, and Dayton Commissioner Nan Whaley were
present. The Kettering Officials were Mayor Don Patterson, City
Manager Mark Schwieterman, Assistant City Manager Al Fullenkamp,
Councilman Tony Klepacz and Councilwoman Peggy Lehner.
Our Executive Director, Terry Schalnat, talked
about our 25 years in the community and the 4000 people we have
served. We have gone from a closet and a van in 1983 to our
wonderful new facility while we serve more than 800 people a
year. We now plan on growing into our new ventures: Autism Study
Group, Gift Shop on the Web, Tile Master for ceramic tile
printing and our new Tipp City expansion.
We then had a champagne toast to this milestone
event, celebrating the past 25 years for us and looking forward
to the next 25 years. May we continue to serve and reach those
in need of our care.
The evening continued with our annual Live
Auction which was emceed by local celebrities Kim Faris of Lite
99.9 and Carl Day of WDTN, Dayton’s NBC affiliate. The
auctioneer was Charlie Schuerholz of Schuerholz Graphics. Items
to be auctioned included Cincinnati Reds Diamond tickets,
Cincinnati Bengals tickets, Ohio State tickets, artwork from
clients at We Care Arts, a vacation package, and much more.
Again we want to thank the many hands and hearts
that made, not only this event, but our past 25 years, to be the
wonderful success it has been.

An Evening At The Races
When: May 9, 2008
Where: Presidential Banquet Center
East Dayton Optimist Club and We Care Arts
presented "AN EVENING AT THE RACES" Friday, May 9, at the
Presidential Banquet Center. A “racy” crowd gathered for this
fun evening, sponsored by National City Bank, including ladies
dressed in their Kentucky Derby finest.
Laughter was everywhere as the Master of
Ceremonies read off the hilarious names of the horses and their
jockeys, which were made up by those who purchased horses. We
had lively betting for each race and excited cheering as each
race was run (or rather a film of a race run long ago was
shown).
The $15 admission tickets included brats, metts,
fish, fries, slaw, soft drinks, and a cash bar with beer and
wine. We ran 10 races with 10 horses in each race. The owner of
the winning horse in each race received a purse, depending on
the odds from the wagering. We wish to thank all those that
attended to help We Care Arts.
